California lemon law is more favorable to consumers than most states, but I received my official buyback offer on my 2019 First Edition yesterday. I purchased the vehicle new in January of 2019. They're offering me 90k(they are paying off registration and interest as well as a third-party warranty I had purchased at the dealer minus $18k for "usage"). My car sat at the dealer for 7 months waiting for a battery module replacement--plus with the recalls that would have also triggered the california lemon law provision as they can't fix the battery properly.

It's been a super long and frustrating process; I initiated the case with JLR in March and it's taken them this long to tell me their proposed resolution. That being said, I'm happy with the offer and will be accepting it. They said the process of signing all of the forms, getting the check issued, and my physical surrender of the vehicle will take up to 30 days from now. But I'm thrilled to put this behind me.

Let me know if you have any questions and I'll do my best to answer them.
I am interested in understanding the deals of this saga with the goal of having a similar outcome. Care to share the details on this forum or in PM? I have a storied history on this site and have been hoping to hear of an outcome such as yours.

I'm interested also. Just picking my 2019 up from 3 months at dealer. 12v battery, AC issues, then steering wheel switches replacement. Jag did pony up for 80% of AC repair as it's out of warranty but a known fail point. Had 1battery module replaced back in May which took a month as well. Now I have the H514 recall.....PM me if you think it's worth pushing.

Hi Pseudonym,

Did you deal with them directly or did you get an attorney involved?

We are in the same boat wih our 2019. It has been in the shop since June 5th and there is no end in sight. I filed a claim in early September but they are not very responsive. I did recive an e-mail today that they may reach out in another 15 business days, but it was vague.

The dealer offered that we purchase a 2024 model for $40k and we said NO WAY! They then offered a pretty good deal on a 36 month lease for a 2024 model, but I dont think we should have to come out of pocket for anything.

@FatCat: The buyback thread

If you indeed qualify for CA lemon law then JLR will have to buy your car back with a deal similar to pseudonym's. (And mine, which was almost 5 years ago.)
The dealer trying to give you a "deal" is doing nothing more than exercising their right to sell you a different car and take this one off your hands. It's completely independent of the lemon buyback process, for which JLR is solely responsible and the dealer is just a conduit (and backs up your claim with their actual service records).

I'm just wondeing if it makes sense to bring an attorney in. If JLR makes a buy back offer, how will we know if it is fair and all that we are entitled to under the CA lemon law?

Also wondering if it might speed up the process.

If you want to spend the $$, an attorney will give you peace of mind, but JLR is a big company and at the corporate level they don't pull fast ones on you. (The dealer might, but that's not corporate JLR.) So if you have patience, you keep engaging your contact without being belligerent, and let the process play out.

Under CA Lemon Law, JLR pays the attorney fees. We need resolution ASAP as we are in the EV charging station business and the Jag is a work tool that is necessary in our business. We have not had the car since 6/5 and they gave us a loaner that is not a plug in.

I would like to find a referreal for a CA Lemon Law attorney that has already been through the process with JLR for the 2019 IPace.

This is very interesting to hear. I am also in CA and have a 2109 FE and am considering initiating the Lemon law process as we are on to our second Traction Battery Fault. Did you involve a Lemon Law attorney and go through the BBB mediation and then arbitration process or did you just submit a case through the Jaguar consumer line (1 800 452 4827)? Thanks.

Anyone have any thoughts on a non CA customer with all of the above issues. AC/Traction Battery/Steering wheel . It was one after another. We filed a case and they denied the buy back and gave me a lousy $1500 in service credits which i already had to use because the car is back in shop. They need to buy back all these ipaces from 2019. I just re-opened a case with JLR but prob goes no place.

I have a pretty good relationship with some people at JLR corporate, but when I asked to do a lemon buyback last year and they offered me a tiny check instead. I turned it down because it came with strings attached (no future claims etc).

I don't think it's a matter of trust. It's Jaguar's responsibility to pay only what they have to in order to settle. I'm betting that having an experienced lawyer across the table instead of a consumer nets a better settlement, but we'll find out soon enough.

I was told by one Lemon Law lawer that I spoke with that once JLR makes a buyback offer it is too late to retain a Lemon Law lawyer and have their fees covered by JLR. These Lemon Law attorneys are very high pressure and it appears the fees that they charge to the auto manufacturers are very high - usually more than the settlement that the consumer receives.

Anyone familiar with JLR buyback of a vehicle that was bought by a private seller? I bought my 2019 FE in January 2024 from a private seller and they are refusing to buyback? The car has been in and out of the shop from the moment I bought it with error codes and recalls. Its been in the shop for the last 5 months and I cant even drive it due to the dealership not being able to get a repaired BECM?

This is madness.

I am reaching out to lemon lawyers that I hope put the hurt on JLR. I will never own another jag... their lack of accountability and customer service has been wild. Its been chaos from the the dealership to consumer support.
"This is madness"

My apologies for sounding unsympathetic, but if I read this correctly you bought an almost 5yr old I-Pace (already subject to the H441 recall) from a private seller (presumably because it was cheaper than buying from a dealer). So 5yr JLR warranty was either done or very close to done. You had error codes from the moment you bought it, and your blaming JLR rather than the private seller or yourself?

Am I missing something?

Exceptionally incorrect. California lemon law is for ANY car that still has a manufacturer’s new vehicle warranty, even the 8 year battery warranty qualifies. Almost all I-PACE vehicles bought in the state would still have California lemon law protection until at least 2026 (if they have less than 100k miles).

UPDATE: I bought(well leased) a new 2024 Defender 130 to replace the I-Pace. Wife isn't a fan of EV's and I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised how unannoyed i am by moving back to an ICE vehicle.

It's almost like Jaguar is daring someone to sue them. After the recall to reduce the battery charge level to 80% I thought about filing a CA lemon law case against them. Before I did it, they announced the buyback, so I figure what the heck, why bother going through it if they're going to buy the car back anyways. Fast forward to the end of February and me not hearing anything from them, plus seeing stories of people getting the "fair market" value offer - I reached out to a CA lemon law lawyer only to learn about the 6 year limit!
I am of the opinion that since they announced the buyback in November that they are bound by the CA lemon law as it was in November. Purchasing a new car was not in the plan this year, and it isn't something I want to do given how incredibly expensive everything is right now but I will have to since I need a replacement car. I would have been happy with a battery replacement! This was my first Jaguar and is undoubtedly my last JLR.
