I find that hard to reconcile with reality

Is it me or does it seem like all EVs have far more variability in their "mileage" than ICE vehicles? Can you imagine an ICE vehicle with a GOM (Guess O Meter)? If you floor it, brake hard, catch a lot of red lights, and "tear it up" would it drop unexpectedly? By as much as an EV? What about cold weather? And does the use of AC, heated seats, etc. have any impact on mileage? (I assume not, only the driving style.) I'm just puzzled by the fascination with efficiency by EV analysts... will this dissipate when range is consistently above 250-300 miles for most EVs? When 350kW+ chargers can 'fillup' in 15 minutes? Like ICE vehicles today, will we learn to accept that higher performance EVs simply get (slightly) worse 'mileage' (efficiency)? I mean, who compares a Corvette to a Yaris and chooses based on 'efficiency' (mpg)? The only thing I truly understand EV neophytes struggling with (momentarily) is that highway mileage is LESS than city mileage. Once explained, they get it, but it runs counter-intuitive to a lifetime of experience.

I do have a mental GoM on my gas-guzzling hippo car and when I pay attention the consumption difference between 55mph and 80mph is mind-boggling. Do I care (other than some vague guilt and some wallet pain)? No.

It's a legacy of early EVs. Even the EREV gets this kind of OCD treatment despite having a generator..

It should but it'll take time for the meme to disappear.

I tossed it last year (not that I was ever OCD about it) for some way better tires on my tiny battery Volt. The difference in handling is worth 2 or 3 miles of range loss. I highly recommend it for any EV, especially with 200+ mile range.

As it is for our commuting the 2 or 3 mile loss hasn't changed the fact that we very rarely exceed the battery range.

My ICE cars started guessing at the range about the year 2000? I know my 2002 Corvette had a Guess O Meter. My 2004 pickup had tons of information like that, including instant fuel economy, average fuel economy, range, business miles, personal miles a/b, fuel remaining in gallons, etc. Corvettes and pickups vary MUCH more on range than EVs do.

If you trust the WLTP, the I-Pace goes 290 miles. If I drive it 'like a Jaguar' I get about 200 miles. That is, with no concern whatsoever about range. I don't drive on public roads at 80+ mph simply because I like to relax, and I can't if I'm looking for cops. But I do floor it quite often. Unlike ICE cars, flooring an EV doesn't hurt as much. Gas cars use Fuel Enrichment tables to provide good acceleration, and at night, you can often see smoke coming out the tailpipe of a performance car who floors it. That's unburned fuel. There is no such thing as unburned electrons or 'running rich'.

That's not to say a gentle foot won't improve your efficiency in an EV, or a gasoline car. There is just a bigger penalty if you must overfuel the engine to achieve throttle response.

I remember when GM performance cars with manual transmissions had a Skip Shift function. If you leave a light easy, it locks out 2nd and 3rd, forcing you into 4th gear to assist economy. How crazy was that?

Hotrodding in an urban environment is one of the joys of an EV. No drama to attract cops, and no big economy hit either. Certainly no 'skip-shift'.
