My best charging ever

This was my best charging session ever.

After over 5 years of charging at EA chargers, I hit the sweet spot of conditions. Weather was partly cloudy and temps 67-72F while charging. I had traveled 192 miles. Battery was at 10% SOC/24 miles left. Mostly interstate (motorway) driving. A long stretch in a pack of traffic blocked by a wide load taking up the entire road. The last 4 miles at local speeds and traffic light whims.

The location is a fairly new location on the east side of Indianapolis, Indiana. Charging started at 99kW rate. I thought that was good enough and went to "take care of business." I checked the app as I started back to the car. It said 19% SOC and 105kW rate. I've had several 102-104kW before but not 105kW.

When I got to the car it was at 27% and had maintained 105kW. Then at 29% it ticked up to 106kW and maintained that to 39%! The inevitable tapering began.

88kW @ 45% SOC.
62kW as it passed the fingers crossed 72% SOC.
80% SOC was achieved between 42 and 43 minutes @ 50kW.
34kW @ 90% and 54 minutes.
It took 1 hour from start to get to 93% SOC.
I stopped at 95% 2 minutes later.

Another observation was that the battery temperature control didn't start until something above 60% SOC. I must have really hit the sweet spot for battery charging temperature!

Reality check: I will never experience this ever again but at least I lived long enough to see it once.

Nice! Just to balance that out, I rented a Ford MachE and stopped at an EC (Electrify Canada, same hardware and org) on the way to the airport to charge before drop-off. Got a measly 30% starting at ~25%. Went until I had to leave to catch the flight and left at barely 50%. They did not ding me for brunt back under 70% (I explained my charge experience).

A Mach-E did charge at a different "balanced" charger at the EA site while I was there. I took a look and it too had started at 10% SOC but was charging at 157kW rate.

My next EA session yesterday, while I typed the op, only got up to 103kW. :) I didn't watch it for its charging characteristics.

These charging rates may be my new norm. o_O
I achieved multiple 102-105 kW rates + another 106 kW today.

FYI, at one site techs were working on one charger. One that has seen more downtime than uptime in my observations over 5 years. One tech said it had been working earlier. They were replacing cables. EA is shortening cables after having replaced the original short cables (not even long enough to reach an I-pace port) before. The ones I saw being installed are something between the two lengths.

They didn't have that charger working before I left. It failed testing. They're driving Ford Lightning trucks now and test charging using them.

It could be a combination of both the updated BECM software and EA updates to their chargers. Given that the number on the display is from EA software, the maximum rate could be accounting for more energy used by the charger for delivery. The BECM update could be allowing a higher charge rate over the lower SOC than had been allowed before.

I only used a level three charger one time before dropping down to 72% max capacity due to a couple of bad cells (still waiting for the replacements). Our place on the coast is just far enough away (140 miles) that I stop for a quick 15 minute charge at the only convenient charging station for peace of mind (i.e., so I can drive as fast as traffic allows with the AC blasting). It's about ⅔ of the way there (⅓ of the way back obs). On a very hot Memorial Day weekend, I hit a max of 80.0781 kW on the way in (24% remaining charge and 95 degree temps) and 71.5190 kW on the way back (50% remaining charge and 90 degree temps). These are newish and well-maintained Duke Energy chargers with 150 kW max.

I assumed these were fairly normal numbers.

On my way to Toronto from Montreal (~560km). First charge (OnRoute on the highway) gave me 67kW (

100kW machine, but they are always below, often 50). Second charge at a PetroCanada station. I used to love these when they first came out, but then had a stretch where they seemed to be in disrepair. This one was in the best spot charge-wise and recent plug share entries seemed to show it was ok. Plugged in at 7%. Went right to 98kW and teetered between 98-99 so I took a picture and started typing this. As I typed, it hit 100, so I jumped out to take another pic. Continued to type and it hit 101, so I got out again and took a pic (highest I’ve seen I think). Got back in and 102! Had to get that one. Every je means getting to the hotel a minute earlier and getting a more sleep before an early morning. After months of negative issues, a nice road trip with no (so far) charging drama is what the doctor ordered.
