There is an ultrasonic sensor on each side of the rear bumper that for me seems to trigger the rear liftgate.

So it's really looking at your shin, and if you kick with your right leg, you need to stand is a different position depending on which side of the car you are on.

I could not figure out why it would work for on the driver's side, but not the passenger side. And I'm guessing that if disable proximity sensing, that might disable it, but I have not tried that.

I may be wrong, but I am fairly certain the bumper sensors are not the liftgate sensors. In the JLR video, the demonstrator does the kick from the side of the car. I just tested it and opened/closes the liftgate by kicking from the corners of the car, carefully avoiding both bumper sensors. I did it on both driver and passenger sides

Yeah, those are not the sensors for the gesture power liftgate. Those are parking aid sensors.

The official videos from Jaguar outline to do the kick at the very corner of the bumper, almost directly behind the rear tire. Seems to work better from the side of the vehicle than directly behind it.

I didn't get the car on the rack yet, but I see no other sensors. It would be a logical choice to use an existing sensor if possible.

But right now, if I aim my kick right at that particular sensor, it is working for me now on both sides, 90%+ of the time.

However, when I tested it with a 2x4, I had poor luck.

It’s a frickin mystery. I just looked under the car and there are no visible sensors, just smooth black plastics and the bolt heads holding it in place. However, I can block the bumper sensors, do the kick and it opens.

It doesn’t matter if I kick in front of the sensor on the side or the one on the back or half-way in between, it opens and closes 100% of the time.

It took some trial and error, but now I can consistently get the kick sensor to work on both sides. Problem was that the area to kick on my driver versus passenger rear side are slightly different. The driver side is at the corner like others have posted. But the passenger side is just to the right of the reverse sensor above the embedded red reflector in the bumper (that is below it, not the reverse sensor to the far right on the passenger side). Kicking straight in and back out in these two areas I can consistently open and close on every try. Showed my son and he was able to repeat the process as well. Now we can show my wife and ensure she doesn't get frustrated.

My gesture power lift gate was not working when I got the car. When I got my infotainment software updated I asked them to check it out and they found that one of the connectors to the sensor was not connected correctly. While the car was up on the lift I asked the tech where the sensor is and he showed me that it was indeed under the car "hidden" above a panel just behind the wheel well. I asked him isn't there like an eye or something and he said no, it is actually a poor design (his words)..LOL

I've had consistent good experience having it work.
But.... I have also activated it twice by accident.
Like when you were sweeping, the first time I washed the car, the motion on the right bumper and side opened the gate.
Then I found the gate will close with a kicking motion. I was putting groceries in the car during a light rain. Kicked open the lift gate, but as I was putting groceries in the back, I heard my wife yell out "watch out!". Apparently I moved right and it "kicked" the lift gate shut. :surprise: I was off to the side a bit as I was moving groceries into the car.
