The I-Pace still won't be out for some time but once it does go on sale, Jaguar's electric vehicle will compete with the likes of the Model 3 and the already on sale Bolt EV. I think Tesla is more of a threat depending on how well made the Model 3 is, the Bolt seems to be a utility EV to me.
I was looking more into the range of already existing electric vehicles for comparison more than performance, but the Model X and BMW i5 does make more sense in terms of performance. We don't know anything about the i5 yet, so we'll have to look at the Model X instead and I think it is currently the fastest SUV in the market with a zero to 100km/h in a claimed 3.1 seconds.
I doubt Jaguar will come out with an I-Pace SVR if the current 2017 F-Pace doesn't have that as an option. With how much power the I-Pace has, would it really need a SVR variant? Perhaps if BMW does come out with an i5 M.
A performance kit for the i-Pace? That is a possibility, maybe some Aero bits like rear wing and spoiler or a set of stickier tires. That sounds easier than trying to tune the electric motors for more power.
New rumor from Automotive News Europe suggests that Bentley could be joining the all electric SUV race too. Guess the brand thinks smaller SUVs could be stealing sales from the highly profitable Bentayga in the future.
"If you are looking for such a car [small SUV] then we are looking to that in combination with the possibilities to go full electric," said Rolf Frech, Bentley's board member for engineering. "It only makes sense if you get really new customers into the brand."
With BMW having plans for an i5 EV car that might mean whatever power plant goes into that could make its way in the Bentley or something similar that generates an adequate power to weight ratio. After all BMW owns Bentley.
...and apparently BMW also has plans for an eSUV...
It can't look any worse than the BMW i3 with its tiny nostrils and short electric range. If the i5 can deliver performance and long range all wrapped up in a stylish package, then it may be able to compete against the i-Pace.
Andy Goss who is the Jaguar director of sales and marketing said that "there’s not a car brand at this show that’s not working on a (full-electric) vehicle, BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Porsche all have product coming.” So when the i-pace is out, it'll be competing against other automotive giants including Tesla.
The front end of the E-Tron will definitely be toned down a lot in the production model whereas the I-Pace looks production ready so we don't expect to see it change too much.
Looking at release dates alone, the Audi e-Tron Sportback will be more of a rival than the iNext. By the time BMW comes out with theirs, the competition would have advanced to the next model with more capabilities and range.
The first few electric cars were awkward because they needed to stand out from the rest and draw attention to the segment. Also makes owners feel special to drive around in a unique looking EV. But with more EVs hitting the streets, they have been normalized as was their design. At least that's my take on it.
Yea, but doesn't Tesla have a track record of production delays and some owners are having problems with getting parts replaced and their cars fixed. I'd rather stick with Jaguar and the I-Pace.
Audi is pushing hard to have the E-Tron beat the I-Pace to market. Actually, the E-Tron is set for a 2018 release so the I-Pace will need to come out early next year.
