Here's this weeks' installment of I-PACE recalls.

Certain 2019-2020 vehicles with battery packs manufactured between March 1 2018 and May 31st 2018 are now being recalled. There is no corrective action yet, as naturally JLR doesn't have their stuff together on this front. They are just asking owners to not charge above 75%, and to park away from structures. Apparently they have identified via the H441 recall that these battery packs are much more likely to have manufacturing defects which lead to fires.

2019 - 2020 model year I-PACE vehicles as below may be affected: SADHA2A11K1F60746 to SADHA2B10L1F76789* * Specific vehicles within the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) range

3/14 update: H484v3 bulletin issues on the 12th of March adds a line ‘that for affected VINs no battery cells are to be replaced at this time.’

See attached bulletin and Q&A doc. Note that they pushed out v1 late last week, and quickly updated it with a v2.

Some progress for those of us in the US " Club 258" and CA "Club 84". It was just a short 8 weeks ago JLR sent a letter that said they would call me. It looks like now I will get a letter. I must say JLR is never boring with their info, since it can change at anytime. I called just 3 days ago to make sure my cell # was on record. It was on record, but Cathy insisted on making a case #. I think they just like to make case # s.

Per my service writer:

COMPLETED BATTERY MODULES NUMBER 7 AND 10 FROM DEVIATION TEST. CHARGED VEHICLE AND FAULT RETURNED REQUIRING BATTERY MODULE 11. REPLACED BATTERY MODULE 11 BEGAN WORKING WITH T/A ON THE CAMERA CONCERN AS THERE WAS AN AS BUILT FILE ISSUE. DURING THAT TIME THE FAULT RETURNED FOR BATTERY MODULE 3 WHICH WAS JUST GRANTED APPROVAL FOR REPLACEMENT.
So round one was 7 and 10; round two was 11, and now 3 needs replacing.

Well, 3 & 7 are adjacent at a corner, 10 & 11 are next to each other and 7, 10 & 11 are monitored by cell supervisory circuit B. All of them require removal of bus bars for all of them when any one needs to be replaced, and disturbs the wiring harness for them. The tech will now be replacing (hopefully not reusing) the same parts (other than the actual cell module) for the third time.

Good luck.

You should have asked who the supplier is since I doubt LGES would cover any costs to replace its supplied battery with a product from another company.

TATA was setting up a battery pouch factory in India with plans to have JLR use them in batteries of their making for future products. I can't see them retrofit these to I-pace batteries. Nor can I see any other company taking up manufacturing batteries for an end-of-life vehicle.

Replacing the the traction battery is the most expensive option for JLR & LGES. It costs more than offering you used car since used car prices are less than the cost of the battery, shipping and installation. It gets a used car off a dealer's lot too. As I stated previously, JLR "wins" replacing the car and you can "win" with a replacement battery. The replacement car may not have all the options on your current car. Weigh that with getting a used car with fewer miles on it and a little less wear and tear.

You know I had overlooked that battery and fitting cost. Seems like $40K for the part alone ? Thanks for pointing that out. I already took my depreciation bath on a used 2019HSE about eighteen months ago with CPO until Feb25. I have no real desire to jump into a brand new iPace and repeat that. And I still dislike the new front grille )

I have still not had a reply to my response to the original letter with the 3 options. I did however receive a similar email, this morning. It feels more forced and the writing is more particular.

I replied the same, that I replied in my original response.... the "very generous valuation" had me laughing my head off.

Has anyone else had any response from Jaguar regarding their options or this new email?

The general JLR rep passed me over to a specialist for the H484 who has been my contact. I think the valuation option has evolved, originally it seemed it was just KBB regional trade in, then it became market value (so dealer retail) and it seems there is some negotiation in that if you are wanting to swap the vehicle out against a new iPace. So far, trading in for brand new 23/24 MY is the only option on the US market it seems. Our UK cousins have also been offered essentially "dealer demo" vehicles from Jaguar Management Fleet from 22MY. My specialist did say however, if I could find a used model from a JLR dealership I was interested in, there may be something they could work out but I am waiting further confirmation. He also took details of my service dealer (who is no longer selling Jaguar) in order to arrange a place in the replacement battery queue, keeping options open. If you have only had contact by mail so far, I would try to escalate to a specialist assigned to the H484 campaign.

I received my call from JLR today with the following 3 options:
1. Traction battery replacement with ETA unknown at this time.
2. Trade in value of $28,253.00 if not owned outright or $30,000 for the car if paid off. This amount of money would be applied to a new 2023/2024 model that is
currently for sale. Price ranges from $60,000 to $70,000. My out of pocket would then be $30,000 to $40,000.
3. JLR will write me a check for $30,000 since I own my I-Pace outright and I could then buy any car with the money.

I told Renee that I will wait for a traction battery replacement, at which time she took the name of the dealer I wanted the battery to be delivered. The next step will be JLR indicating the battery is shipping and the dealer of my choosing will be contacting me. As I said earlier the time table for this next step remains unknown. If you have not been contacted and you have received a H484 recall notice via mail, I would suggest calling JLR at 800-452-4827 option 9 and a ticket will be issued for some one to contact you. I did this just 10 days ago and my call was generated today. She indicated also that in the US there were fewer than 400 cars with the H484 recall.

UPDATE: I just now opened my postal service mail and received a letter from JLR (dated June 26, 2024) indicating my traction battery pack parts are now available. My next step is to contact my Jaguar dealer and set up an appointment for installation. Quite remarkable that Renee at JLR did not know when the battery packs would come on line at 4 pm today. I must say I am getting my hopes up for a resolution since I have been at 72% since the first week of December 2023. { I did have module 8 replaced on April 20th but it only lasted 4 days until it went back to 72%).

Don't get your hopes up too much.

I received the same 6/26/24 letter and immediately called my local dealership on 7/2. They knew nothing about the 2nd letter and after emailing a copy of the letter and a couple of hrs thinking about it, they came back with the statement that they could not order the battery directly, but that I needed to get approval from JLR.

Talked to JLR customer service, and then "Nigel" @ JLR, who forwarded by details to another group that were handling the details. I was advised by "Nigel" that it may be a few weeks until I heard back.

Progress - maybe. New battery this Summer - I doubt it.

Typically it is dealer diagnoses (attaches TOPIx Cloud interface, gathers doc of problem, opens a TA with Jaguar with doc attached) then Jaguar authorises ordering repair parts. It is not up to the owner to contact Jaguar for authorization to order parts.

I know the cell module repairs no longer require a TA but full battery packs are a larger expensive. Regardless, it isn't up to an owner to get approval for anything. That second letter gives direction for owner to contact Jaguar to get the process of replacement or buyback or vehicle replacement started.

Ayepace has it right. According to my scheduler the next step is for me to bring my car in August 8th for diagnosis and at that time JLR will be contacted to order the traction battery. She also was reading all this from a script that was to be read to the owner when receiving a call. Now the interesting thing was that delivery of the battery would take only 3 or 4 days according to the paper. Now all this information is only on paper and has not yet been executed. My service advisor is to call me before August 8th with more information. I will continue to update.

After also receiving the H484 parts are available letter last week, I called the dealership and scheduled service for next week. I asked if the battery would be delivered by then and was told they can’t order the battery until the car is in the shop. The letter states the repair should be completed in two days, but I’m sure that doesn’t include the time for the parts to arrive.

Other than having to rent a car for a 1,000 mile round trip, the 72% limit hasn’t been much of an issue, so I hope this doesn’t turn into another situation of the car being stuck in the shop for weeks on end waiting for parts.

I'm skeptical. I'd re-call the dealership and ask them what their best estimate is of parts timing. This may well end up taking weeks.

Edit: and call JLRNA to get their take. I'd prioritize clear communication before surrendering my car, given the nightmare anecdotes we've heard here on the forum.

My 2020 I-Pace was diagnosed with a battery fault this week. As per the dealership, H441 software had identified module 14 to be faulty.

For about two weeks, the fan would go into overdrive whenever I cross 70 mph. A week later I kept getting a warning saying traction battery fault, drive with caution. 2 days later, the car was restricting itself to a maximum charge of 72%. Luckily I was able to get a service appointment.

The dealership informed a few days later that H441 software found that module 14 was faulty. They want me to pay 6979$ to get it replaced. I have escalated the issue to JLR NA. Waiting to hear back from them. Not too optimistic.

Jaguar just called and offered a new battery pack. To recap, I just got the kitty back after a month of the dealer playing whack-a-mole with bad cells. It has been running fine. The person on the call said Jaguar was ending the practice of replacing individual cells and everyone would be offered a free pack. I have no idea if this is remotely accurate.

They also offered $30,000 towards a 2023 I Pace.

I told them to order a new pack.

Here's the text of the email I just received:

Dear XXXX,

Thank you for speaking with me today. I understand you would like to wait for replacement battery for your 2019 I-Pace. In the meantime, check out South Jaguar of Orlando inventory on line and see what the cost are for a 2023 I-Pace. We may be able to work something out to get you into a newer model.

My name is XXXXX, and I am the Jaguar Land Rover consumer affairs specialist assigned to your case. I am currently working on your consumer affairs case pertaining to the H484 campaign attached to your 2019 I-PACE (VIN XXXXXXXXXXXXX). JLRNA has provided its customers with 3 different options to assist in resolving the campaign. Which are:

The repair option would consist of the full battery pack replacement under warranty at no expense to the customer. Please note, the battery manufacturer states that a timeline of availability for the battery pack is unclear due to the global parts/materials issues. This delay will more than likely be measured in months, not weeks. That being said, if you choose this option, there is no knowing when the parts will arrive to repair your vehicle.

The vehicle trade option is to be applied to 2023-2024 Jaguar I-PACE you locate within dealership inventory and would work like this. JLR will utilize Kelly Blue Book to determine the current retail/private sale value of your I-PACE by inputting your VIN, last documented mileage, selecting “excellent” for the condition (very good is considered no extensive damage but accounts for typical user wear and tear based on the mileage) and KBB will then generate fair market value for your vehicle. JLR will then add an additional “goodwill” amount to your new vehicle purchase.

Recall Repurchase consists of a value taken from Kelly Blue Book to determine the current retail/private sale value of your I-PACE by inputting your VIN, last documented mileage, selecting “Excellent” for the condition and KBB will then generate fair market value for your vehicle. Please take into consideration, any lease/lien debt will have to be satisfied with the repurchase amount JLR would be providing to you for this repurchase.

For your convenience I have attached the “fair market value” dollar amount of $30,678.00 this is a starting point. I hope to reach a resolution that best fits your needs. Would you be available for a phone call to discuss these options and any ideas/questions you may have to assist me in providing the best possible outcome for you? I am available Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00 pm (EST). I would love to hear from you. I look forward to helping you navigate through this difficult issue. Thank you for your time.

Best regards,
My car was not previously within the H484 VIN range, but now I am (just checked nhtsa.gov again).

If you previously were not part of H484, I'd look again.
