H459 recall to fix H441 recall on some 2019-2020 cars

Initially the recall said 199 cars impacted in US. NHTSA filing now has the number as 501. Transport Canada recall 2023-564 count is now increased to 54 from 17. It appears the initial software update for these cars didn't have correct logic in the update.

"Additionally, the software supplier advised the latest software files released for installation into 2019 and 2020 model year vehicles contains an error in part of its diagnostics strategy and the required detection of battery module performance issues is not fully present. As a result, the vehicle remains with the safety defect even though the retailer reported completing the safety recall."

It hints at cats not updated via TOPIx Cloud or have the BS level will need to get a second inoculation shot and could explain the difference between BS and BT.

I’ve been on the phone with Jaguar customer service several times over the last week. My dealer says that at one point they were authorized to replace the battery, but that the next day, Jaguar called and said to wait and they would send an updated software version in October. It’s now past midway through November.

The dealer acts like letting me have a loaner Land Rover Discovery Sport, but I have a Porsche Cayenne Diesel which is better than that anyway. I need a similar electric car, not a giant SUV.

Yeah, I get reminded of this when I spend $85 filling the Évoque. Granted, I was driving civics, Corollas and Sentras during my multiple visits during COVID, BUT STILL…

Object of the current recalls is obviously to just irritate the owners. Why can't they just put the trip temperature point into software that will trip the charging offline(like it does now). When the temperature drops below the setpoint add another ~15 minutes and then allow an auto reset with the alarm clear. This would use the same logic they have now and adds an auto reset. If the trips get too close together, you need at least a new cell. But the driver can continue to use the car to it's full original mileage, with slightly slower charging to a full charge.

Local overheating is observed at some cell contacts, which cannot be detected by a temperature sensor. Therefore, your option to limit the charging current will result in a charge taking 90 hours; This option clearly will not suit the owners. [QUOTE="Trielectric, Post: 90313, Member: 2445quot;] Clearly the purpose of the current recalls is simply to irritate owners. You are missing the point. We have already tripped off a temperature sensor. That temperature will go down if we are not charging. You should be allowed to reset the software when this happens. I am not proposing they change the limit just add the abilty to reset the alarm when it has cooled down. I have already proved that my car did not exceed a limit charging at 4 fast chargers in 1 day, all to 100% charge(I needed it). This was with the software installed. I went >2 months before I got the Traction Battery fault alarm.

This may have been published before: so here it is again, as of May 18, 2023 by the NHTSA Reports from Jaguar.
"JLR has received 8 reports of vehicle fires in the US, reports were received on the following dates; June 20, 2019 July 6, 2020 August 31, 2021 August 31, 2021 November 11, 2021 December 20, 2021 June 22, 2022 May 3, 2023". I believe, we have also heard, another one happened, after the first recall this year. There were two cars listed for Aug 31, 2021. It is not a misprint. Below is the 3rd Quarter repairs.

I just checked and Jaguar USA still says
NHTSA Recall Number23V-369
Manufacturer Recall Number H441 Recall Date 05-24-2023

has not been completed. It has and the screen in my I-Pace confirms that it took. My question is: Given that H441 is still showing as not completed would the subsequent recall show up or not?

Left character is model year.
K = 2019
L = 2020
M = 2021
N = 2022
P = 2023

The 1 after that is the assembly plant (Graz, Austria).

The remaining 6 characters are the production sequence number.

USA 501 vehicles identified that JLR have records for that H441 was not carried out correctly. They need H459. If your car has not had H441, it will need H459.

This is confusing to say the least. My car is in the VIN range on the Safety Recall Report, but looking up the VIN on the NHTSA shows no repaired recalls. Same thing at Jaguar Ownership - VIN Recall Search| Jaguar USA.

I previously responded to the recall and the car indicates that it has the BS software.

I generally keep my car below 75% charge and I'm not particularly worried about it, but I'd like to know if I should have the newer software installed.

If you have the BS software you are good. That means H441 was done correctly. After 30 days if you don’t get any battery warnings you are in the clear and can charge normally.

There are cases where the dealer used Pathfinder or something else to install H441 but did not get a failure indication. From other posts I note some cars got software but not calibration files as noted by the letters in the rest of the BECS identification. Both situations should lead to JLR sending notice of H459 to get them properly updated.

We have also seen the software change to BT and then BU.

According to the dealer invoice H441 BECM software update was completed on my vehicle but the in-dash display still shows the version as BE 🤷‍♂️

Spoke to my service rep at the dealer and he looked into why the recall work had not made it into the database. He said that it was zeroed out and entered but that it never went to their Warranty person to bill Jaguar USA. Not sure why but he said that he pulled up another I-Pace he supports and the same had happened with it. He said it was probably because it was 100% software and was $ zeroed out. Perhaps others have had that happen? He was going to push it out to the warranty person so that they could process it with Jaguar USA.

Update: My dealer sent me an invoice ($0) for the H441 update today (got an email notice last week that my car was receiving service - which it was not). Seems that this was their only solution to not having uploaded the H441 repair to JAG USA previously. I will be checking the JAG USA database this evening to see if that update is now reflected and what, if anything, comes up as still needing to be done. H459 was still not showing for my 2020 last week, perhaps this will shake that loose?

Read the below. My take is if you own a 2019 or 2020 I-Pace you need to install the newest software which no one has yet! Although this statement is 20 days old now.
"Additionally, the software supplier advised the latest software files released for installation into 2019 and 20MY vehicles contains an error in part of its diagnostics strategy and the required detection of battery module performance issues is not fully present. As a result, affected vehicles remain with the safety defect. As a result, the vehicle remains with the safety defect even though the retailer reported completing the safety recall."

It does look like all previously "repaired" 2019-2020 will get included in H459 if they got the update prior to JLR fixing the fix. Possibly that is the BU level of the update.

"The RDC reviewed the information on November 2, 2023, and determined that vehicles identified that have received the latest level software should be included in the scope of this existing recall."

Some of the NHTSA doc still references the original 199 cars impacted. Other doc still states 501. However, both of those counts are too low based on sales of MY 2019-2020.

I'll wait for a recall letter before I approach the dealer for a redo.
