H441 update and charging restriction MY21+

So I have kind of been half-following the H441 update issues. Since I have a MY22 I pace I got the update OTA smoothly without an issue with the installation or any other features of the car. The only issue for me is that the charging speed on my home charger is now slower, to the point where I can no longer fully charge the I pace in 8 hours overnight. (Those are my low cost hours for home electricity usage). So I’ve had to use off peak hours to charge as well. Not a big deal of course, but annoying. I tried searching the forums but it wasn’t clear to me if this is a permanent “nerf” of the charging? I assume that this is how it’s going to be moving forward.

Folks remember that the Xmiles/hour figure is not reliable. What goes into the battery on an L2 charging session is determined by three things:

1. The output power of your charging unit, which for the vast majority of us here in the US is 240V at 32 amps; thus, the maximum output that is achieved and offered to the car is 240V*32amps = 7.68 kW. This rate is maintained until the car throttles it due to the reasons in 2.
2. The car's battery control management systems, which will sometimes not put all that energy into the battery as usable because cell balancing and battery heating may be invoked, which use some of the energy offered to the car, that therefore won't go into the battery. (And at the very end of the session, for the last few minutes, the input is throttled to below the L2 maximum to gently stuff the battery to full.)
3. The (thermal) loss of the charging cable, a good approximate number for which is 13%.

You get ~6.7kW going into the battery unless it's throttled by 2. above. Model year don't matter.

So I went back and found an old charging screenshot it was the same 9%/hr so I guess it didn’t change.

I guess I started running the battery lower and then charging from a lower state. So I can charge about 72% in 8 hrs of off peak charging. Looks it has always been the same

I’ve had both the auxiliary batteries replaced after two catastrophic breakdowns. The related voltage converter was also replaced. After two service trips lasting 6 weeks, I met with the service manager and he hard pressed me to have H441 update, stating that all warranty coverage with dealing with the batteries would be void if I didn’t. Although no issues with the update or directly after, now one month down the road the charging is throttled first at 95%, and going lower so that now it won’t charge over 85%. I drive a regular highway route of about 165 miles and I can hardly make it there on full charge, so a 100% charge is required. Any advice as to how and approach the Jag service to address this similar problem?

@Bucky I assume the charging has been done with a level 2 charger. Correct?

Do you have the level 1 charger that came with the car originally? If so, try charging with it. It will take longer. Significantly longer; at least twice as long as level 2. Try charging when you're going to be snowed/frozen in for an extended period (previous posts suggest WI area). Does it charge to 100% with the level 1 charger?

If charging on level 2 before setting off, try turning on pre-conditioning and setting a departure time. This will engage heating the battery before and during/while charging. Do you get better results doing this?

I'm a new participant on this site. I have owned a 2019 First Edition witt a generally good experiance since purchase, until last year when my 12 battery failed and was replaced on warranty, then the h441 update led to continuous traction battery warnings with instructions to limit charging to 70% of capacity followed by the diagnosis or two cells in the main drive battery failing, three weeks in the shop (good news I very much enjoyed the 2024 F Pace "loaner").

When I got my Ipace back with new cells recharging was limited to 70%. I was told this was to ensure battery longevity and that I could adjust the limit up to 100% in settings for a longer trip.

Is this a normal instruction following replacement of the main battery cells?
Is JLR just trying to get me to the end of my 8 year battery warranty without another claim?
Or...?

If there is a more relevant forum/thread please let me know.

Just to make sure I read this right. You went from traction battery error to having it diagnosed, modules ordered and installed in 3 weeks? The typical time reported here is 3-4 months! Mine is at 10+’weeks and I hope to get it back this week.

There is no limiting setting on a 2019 car. That feature wasn't introduced until MY22 for US market. If your car isn't charging beyond 72% there remains a problem with your car or they didn't do the calibration process after replacing the bad modules.

You could have another cell flagging a problem or the dealer has not reset the H441 DTC code.

I know of one car that had a module replaced and the fault in another module showed up after the dealer test drive.
