H441 Battery Recall Software is Now Available

As of today, JLR published several new documents regarding the battery recall in Topix. They updated the original bulletin (attached), and also provided dealer service instructions for updating the BECM software. The customer letter and a Questions & Answers document were also published, and all are attached here. According to the QA doc, the new version of the software is now available. I also noted that the H441 service campaign is now showing for my vehicle, whereas it wasn't previously.

I have my car booked to go into the dealer on Friday, and will report back on the new version. I'm already running the very latest BECM software, so it will be interesting to see how many modules get updated.

Yes, I think that's precisely it. The new software monitors the battery for a certain condition to be present that correlates to failure. That condition must not always be present, and has the potential to present itself over time and normal use.

Got my update installed at the dealer today while I waited. All of my modules are on the latest version now, which for reference equates to: BS-AAL-BF-AF-BE
Just charged past 75% luckily. So far so good!

I got off the phone with my dealer today and they told me nothing has been released to them yet.... I told them, that's interesting because other dealers are installing the software. I like my local dealer, but they are pretty clueless when it comes to the I-pace.

Hi Densjag, not sure if you were asking a question to me or another member, but I was able to charge my 2022 MY car past the 75% limit to 80%. I did not want to take it to 100% as I had brought it all the way up from 20% that day and didn’t want to push my luck. Also, looking at other threads on this forum, it appears that many members do not take their cars above 80% unless they are planning a trip. Regards BostonJag

I got the software update yesterday. Today I was able to charge from 51% to 100%. I have noticed in the past that my state of charge never shows 32% or 31%. When driving it jumps straight from 33% to 30%. Same when charging - it goes straight from 30% to 33%. I will try to run it down to 30% or below to see if the new software detects that as an issue.

I took mine in today (Atlanta) waited several hours they did some camera updates but said they could not do the recall software update because Topix was down. Topix screen was showing "Communication Error". At least I got a car wash. :confused:

I got my software update yesterday. Today, I am struggling to get the car charged above 55%. It is a hot day (over 90 degrees), so maybe the software update is doing its job. I hope that is not the case with the hot summer weather arriving, as it is going to severely limit the useable range.

So you're seeing a reduction in charging rate? I am starting to suspect the same, but I don't have a big sample size yet. Have been seeing more pronounced dips after prolonged charging; well into the 5kw/h range, which was almost unheard of before. I also saw charging go to zero briefly, also something I've never seen before. Coincidentally, it appeared to happen right around when the car was potentially crossing the 75% threshold:

What I saw was that the charging stopped unexpectedly at about 140 miles capacity, and I could not get it to restart charging. After multiple attempts, I decided to drive around the block and came back to another charger, and managed to get charging to restart, and all going OK for now.
As I said, it is hot here today, and the car is in the sun, so I suspect the battery may have overheated while charging, and the latest software caught that. Right now, it is still being charged, so I will see how far that gets, but it does appear to be charging a little slower than normal.

@Brendon : Here is one to add to your sample size. Never have seen this charging rate history before the H441 update. It dropped to 2.5 kw momentarily and then rebounded to 7.25 kw immediately. My garage was cooking today between 90 -95 degrees and the car quietly turned on fans and cooling regularly. I started at 66% and 2 hours later is when this anomaly occurred. Unfortunately, I do not know exactly what SOC it was at when it dipped dramatically.

Very interesting. It definitely seems like newer versions of the BECS baby the battery more during charging. I've had 3 different BECS updates, and have noticed increasingly conservative charging profiles with each one. With my factory software, my car would charge consistently at 7.6 kw/h and hold pretty steady. After the first update that changed, and then got more pronounced again with the update (BR) that I received about a month ago.

Based on where that major dip occurred, it looks plausible as though perhaps it happened at the 75% mark for you as well?

So I now see my BECS as BS-AAE-BC-AC-BE after the H441 update. So if the first 2 letters (BS) reflect the BECM version, what modules do the other 4 sets of letters represent? In addition, am I still behind on the newest versions available?

Received OTA update to PiviPro 4.0 on June 30th, which also addresses the recall. Able to charge to 100%. Some new features with Apple Car Play/Android integration into the dash. 360 camera updates. Profiles are now labeled accounts.

When my update went in my range dropped drastically but has since recovered to about where it was after the first long drive. I freaked out a bit initially but am good now.

Following up on my post - after the software update, I ran it down to 14%, then fast charged it to 35%, at 100 kW all that time (11 minutes of charging), ran it back down to about 20%, then slow charged it to 100%. Each time it was passing 32% and 31% much more quickly than any other % number, but no warning or any issues. Range is normal. I was parking outside for the past 2 weeks. Today moving back to the garage.

I don't think 30% is the only "place" where there is some abrupt transition in the percentage estimate. I've seen it at 7% as well. I think they divvy up the voltage graph into discrete intervals and at the transitions you get jumps.

I reported yesterday that I charger to 82%, 188 miles.

Went out today and the milage did not drop as I was driving 10 miles. Parked and started car again and it showed 179 miles?

Back in the car in a couple of hours and it showed 174 miles then jumped up again to around 180 and finally back to 174. For the last 5 miles of my drive it worked normally?

It seems like a lot of us are experiencing issues after the update. Hopefully it will straighten itself out.

Nothing scientific here, but here are my observations post-update:

1) no problem charging to 100%
2) charging seems slower than before
3) range estimates seem both less accurate and more conservative than before

I typically drive <15 miles a day so I’m not too worried about it.

I finally got my I-Pace back end of June after over 2months waiting for the wiring harness to be replaced, they also replaced the two 12v batteries and applied the recall. They had charged to 100% and I was able to completely charge a few days later though with the erratic dips that others have seen:

Drove around for a few days and got the car down to ~30% before heading out of town for a week. When I got home I charged for about an hour before heading to work with a very flat charge rate:

When I got home I plugged in to charge over night and again got a very flat charge rate issue being this time the car said its charge completed at 94% unplugged and replugged the charger but still wouldn’t attempt to top off the battery at charge complete. I’ll plug in after work and see where it stops tonight:

this has happened to me a few times. Turn off the car, go inside, wait about 10 minutes and try again. In My experience it’ll work just fine

…it is frustrating though that this has happened to me 3x and the dealer can’t seem to figure out what’s wrong with it

Not what you want to see after 2 months in the shop! I recall the disappointment and the loss of trust after having several issues back to back, and I got that message once on a long trip after charging. Fortunately it cleared and never came back (1 year and counting), so I assumed it was a wonky ground on the charger or something. That all has been a while now, so the pleasure and trust of driving the car has returned. I hope it is not the battery, but that may be the result of the software update actually detecting an issue with the battery?
I still trust the car just really disappointing to see it after the long stretch of not having the joy of driving it. Drove it to work anyway and everything was working fine, just had the warning indicator.

I am thinking this is really the software doing its job and this is the message we see to get it to the shop for further diagnostics. The fact that 23iPace has had it several times since the recall and the dealer can't diagnose it plays to the fact that Jaguar is just collecting info on for the recall at this point and hasn't decided the full fix yet.

let me clarify … I’ve had it several times, all BEFORE the recall. I don’t think this message is related to the recall at all.

at first I thought it was the 12v battery, but considering I’ve driven the car several months since it first happened, I think it’s safe to rule that out (as the dealer already has).

my experience with this warning light has been:
  • Feb 2023 - dealer said it’s probably nothing, flashed the software
  • May 2023 - dealer couldn’t figure it out, said to bring it back if it happens again
  • july 2023 - happened for a third time, haven’t had a chance to take it in yet (I did take it in after this happened for the recall and cabin air filter, but couldn’t drop it off for them to diagnose).

…the Feb and May times were after it had charged at home, but the July instance was while I was out running errands and the car wasn’t plugged in at all.

…each time this has happened, I just go inside and wait 10 minutes and then the car works perfectly fine, and the message doesn’t return for several months it seems

I plan on taking it back in soon to hopefully get this addressed finally. If anyone has had this issue and knows what it might be, please let me know
