GPS on Nav software seems dead

Hi,

I noticed a couple of days ago that the location indicated on the Nav software seemed stuck at some random spot between work and home. It did not move for a couple of days until it got worse and plunked me in the ocean off the coat of Africa somehow. I checked the journeys in the Jag app and it accurately has been logging the trips, so there is something in the GPS that is working. It is a 2019 with the TouchPro infotainment. My questions are:

1: Are there two GPS receivers in the car, one for the telematics (journeys) and one for the Nav software?

2: If the answer is they both share the same GPS receiver, does anyone know a way to force the nav to reboot (assuming it just needs a kick to get back to work)?

Thanks for any info.

The monthly map updates reboot navigation besides the usual reboot after the car is off for at least 15 minutes. The newest map update came out last Thursday.

What TCU version are you on? This would be a good reason to get version 20.2 pushed out if you don't have it.

BTW, that looks like you were at 0 degrees latitude and longitude. I hope you have air suspension and lifted it to the max. 😉

The issue has persisted for a few days so the car has been off for hours at a time (and I noted the ~20-30sec boot time for the Nav.

I always wondered if the jag could float (not really as the weight kinda makes it impossible). I’ll try getting a map update. The last time I tried that, it would not recognize the update on the thumb drive (same one as I used in previous updates) but I’ll give it a try again.
Thanks.

As far as I remember, when I was retro engineering the OBDII CANBus, only the TCU module exposed a value that looked like a long and lat.

There is possibility that a TCU software update to 20.2 would fix it if you don't have this version. What version do you have?

Besides the TCU hardware, the other hardware involved is the roof pod and GNSS signal splitter. The latter one splits the GPS signals from the pod and sends them to the TCU and IMC. It is located in the left rear of the car near the TCU. No software update will fix the signal splitter that has gone bad.

I downloaded a map update hoping installing might force a reset, but I don't seem to be able to get the system to recognize my USB key, This has been the case for a while now (tried 2 USB keys). The key is formatted MS-DOS FAT 32 (default out of the box). The sequence I did (from the instructions:)
1- Start the car and leave it in park.
2- After the Nav has loaded, insert the USB key
3- Wait for a prompt to begin the intall.

I never get a prompt. Have I forgotten something?

Did you open navigation or just wait at the home screen? Reads like you have a bad USB port panel if you opened navigation.

Did you try both ports? Can you play a music file from the same stick?

I waited for the nav to boot up (if I click too early, I get a "Navigation Loading..." message, so I waited). I tried both ports and two USB sticks. I use the USB all the time for CarPlay and I did update the map once last year (using the same USB stick as one of the two I tried now). I'll take it up with the dealer when I go in for my winter tires.

Is your phone plugged in at the same time? Have you tried with just the USB stick plugged in?

If you have a stick with a version newer than your car but older than the latest, you might see if the dealer can get that version installed. If they succeed, then you (or they) can use the stick with the latest version as a test for map updating working as it should.

One other thought about map updates, although I doubt it will change anything.

Open up navigation, then go to navigation settings. Scroll all the way down and select the "Installed maps & options"

Is "Auto-check for updates" checked? If not, turn it on.

I have the auto-check on and get the reminders to update the map.

On a happier note, the GPS seems to have woken up again. It is now showing my location correctly and I get this from the herokuapp page:
TU_STATUS_DAYS_SINCE_GNSS_FIX1

Not sure why this happened. Maybe some 5g tower went up (there is a concern that 5g cell frequencies might interfere with GPS? I'll see if it keeps working. Thanks for the sleuthing!

I had both batteries and most of the battery management guts replaced earlier this year so I am assuming not.

i did notice that my iPhone seemed to have a weak signal as well (I had to place it on the dash for a consistent signal which I’ve never had to do before). Maybe it was a GOS outage of some sort?

Hi Rcomeau,
The zero/zero WG84 location off of west africa is the default for any satnav using US GPS signals. It happens when the system fails to establish any GPS satellite signals. This can happen due to a failure of the antenna or it’s connection or due to atmospheric conditions, thunder storms and the like. I’ve seen it many times sailing in south east asia. It also happened a lot in the middle east during the gulf war, but that was deliberate and another story!
With regards the map update, I’ve purchased a new 32 GB stick as suggested and will try it later. I also forgot to mention in my first post that the system is showing that my license has expired yet the online updater shows I’m good till Oct 2024. All very annoying and time wasting.

The stick was purchased from Intermarché, but undoubtable made in China; but then again what electronics isn’t nowadays! I suppose Jaguar kit may be the exception, which is probably one of the reasons for the multitude of annoying glitches.
The maps are downloaded from:
by logging in to my account.

I cant believe what Iam reading here... I was the exactly same problem today. I have MY19 with TouchPro Duo and today I saw GPS position stucked somewhere in Africa. I tried everything. Shutted down the car / leave the key far away / waiting a hour with car locked / tried resetting infotainment but nothing helped. After I reset infotainment and system fully boot up I cant go to General setting, when I clicked to it it throw me back to main screen. I also cant create profile - it stuck at creating.... After many trying also the reset infotainment grayed out. I also noticed on the trip that my mobile data sim card connection fail. It show crossed out zero where I previos seen the mobile signal. This was happened every 2-3 minutes (crossed out zero / reconnect / register to 4G). Finally after some trips today I left car for 10 minutes and after I come back the GPS and Sim card working again normally. I updated the maps few days ago (because new version is available). Now I suspect that every time I update the maps the car start to have some problems - maybe its only my assumptions but from the time when I got my car everthing worked normally first time when I Updated everything also with maps and my first problem appeared -charging fail with AC. So my car went to dealer and they check it and ordered a onboard charger module because they say its faulty , dealer also reset/reinstall everything and I got the car back while Iam waiting for a part to deliver. Some days after I got the car back the AC charging started working and it was work normally like nothing was faulty. It was working maybe a month (still waiting for part). BUT !!! I was updated the maps again and what happened? AC charging again fail .... its very weird if updating maps have connection with again AC charging failure or its only random match ? Why after map update this GPS and Simcard module problems appeared suddenly? Why afrer map update suddenly AC charging fail again ? When charger module is faulty its faulty or not ? How possible charger working normally for weeks while Iam waiting for replacement? I never thinking the map update mess something with car but now 2 times updated maps and every time when I update some problems appeared ??? Something is very wrong with this software. I have all the latest software installed. So whats wrong with iPaces ? When I buyed this car I really imagined I left from ICE cars problems but I see I have problems with sowftare and its maybe worst when no one can identifi from where this software problems come.

Well, one problem solved insofar as the USB stick. I dug out an old USB 2.0 stick with a bunch of movies on it but with more than the required 32 MB of free space, downloaded latest maps (again) and lo and behold the stick was recognised and after spending 20 minutes or so sitting in the car intermittently pushing the brake peddle so it didn’t switch off I now have the latest maps installed.
I’m now of course hoping I don’t get Ivan83’s problems!

I am back right now from the same sitting in the car for 20 minutes and pushing the break pedal :ROFLMAO:

Because I just find a problem when I downloaded the maps to 32 GB USB drive and I see many files have zero size ! So I download it again and same - some files have zero size! So i check that map downloader say USB need to have 30,4 GB free space but when I chcek my 32 GB USB drive size windows show its only 28 GB ! So i try to format 64 GB USB drive to FAT 32 and download maps again and compare with files on 32 GB Drive.... and ..... this is it ! Files are not have zero size at 64GB drive ! So here is the problem! Map downloader cant download complete maps to 32 GB drive I dont know why but maybe because real drive size si only 28 GB (I use Kingston) Downloading normally ended without any errors or warning - but with files with zero size! So I go and update the car navigation again with 64 GB drive where all files are OK. After upgrade I do factory reset of the infotainment , setup profile, sign in to navigation account and FINALLY ???? Navigation OK, Sim ok and now the best at the end the car started charging with AC again !!!! Is this real or Iam dreaming ? :ROFLMAO:

For better speed with map updates, use USB 3.x sticks. Use name brand not the cheapest you can buy. So far I have found Samsung to be the quickest to download to and load the car from. Kingston, SanDisk, and Verbatim perform well too.

@ivan83, is yours a 2022 model year car or something else? Dealer should check for BCM/GWM programming update since this reads like there may be issues with inter-module communication.

I had a similar issue this week-end. On Sunday morning, when we took the car at the hotel the Navigation system took a very long time to boot, and when it booted the car was sitting in the hotel parking lot and the map was not updating. I stopped the car for a few minutes but it did not help. We stopped in a national park for a few hours but it did not help. I let the car sleep for a night but it did not help. The next day I took my Autel to scan code , and I saw U2300-56 on TCU. I used a TCU reset service routine and noticed that my history of recent addresses was full. I cleaned them all in Jaguar.here.com. The next day the problem was solved. Did it help resolving this or no, I have no idea…
