Forget the rebates... IL first state to levy annual "tax" on EVs...

Let's hope this doesn't become the norm... will stifle EV sales wherever it occurs!

Gas and diesel are taxed but also heavily subsidized in other ways.
Inevitable in the long run

It seems that this particular tax is particularly excessive (compared to the additional fuel tax for ICW cars).

Having said that, it is inevitable that the same taxes on conventional cars designed to fund the maintenance of the roads we all drive on will have to find their way to electric cars. While electricity is cheaper than gas, the cost of paving the road is the same regardless of the type of engine is in the car driving on it, so the tax to total cost ratio will be worse for EVs for the overall contribution of EVs to the road maintenance to be the same per car.

Given the social benefits of driving EVs, hopefully these taxes will be waived for a while to help motivate the transition, but at tome point, all cars will have to pay their share of the road infrastructure costs.

All true. However, some of these taxes are specifically targeting EVs out of some perverted form of political stupidity and hatred for the environment.

Wow! I’ve never even heard of someone that hates the environment, but you know some in government?

btw - if someone is spending $90k on a personal vehicle to ‘save the planet’ they are are doing it wrong...

Lots of people happily pollute because they can make money in the process. I see it time and time again in government and individuals. Our government has opened up more and more nature preserves to drilling. Individuals purposefully roll coal in their lifted trucks and then park in front of superchargers. What else is it other than hatred of the environment?

I don't really care about me and our 90k car. I care about widespread adoption of EVs. California quite smartly put income caps on the state EV rebates. They even have given people with high incomes who are under the cap the option of getting carpool passes versus rebates. This didn't seem to make a dent in Tesla sales, and I bet Californians have, per capita, bought more I-Paces than any other state. EVs will be, in the long run, a massive positive for the environment. Raising taxes on EVs to pay for corrupt infrastructure projects and help prolong the oil industry's profits is just sick.

Honestly, the 7500 fed tax credit should have a price cap of 50k or so, or better yet it should be a tax rebate that goes up the lower the income.

Right.

And try not to get all flipped out about proposals. Write the dopes and tell them how you feel if it lowers your blood pressure. But keep in mind that most often they do these things solely to get attention.

How's that Green New Deal progressing by the way?

Only in America is all I will say.
HEY!!!

Like Europe has its sh*t together? I may have to disown you, Dad. ;)
If you do the math, the fees are more expensive then the amount paid in gas tax, a lot more. These things are of course unfair and tactics from the big oil company lobbyists and republicans (politicians) to force the decline and retard the EV (Alternate Fuel) sales and technology advancements. Look what happen to sales in Georgia when the did this, sales declined 80%; they know what they're doing. The climate and impact we humans are having on the encroaching crash of our ecosystem is of little concern to them. Their positions will of course change when it hits home for them which is encroaching quickly. Sad they can't understand these things in foresight, it is closer than they can imagine.

Not a single citizen would agree to this. Aren't our elected officials suppose to be doing what we want?, what is right by us and the general population. Where is the existing infrastructure money going? Managing the inefficiencies of the system would go "a lot" further but of course that wouldn't give them all the latitude to lavishly line their pockets.

Too much to comment on this and similar subjects. We need an organized middle class with a voice loud enough to effect a change and send a message to the big company lobbyists and politicians that they can't have rule over what is right.

And...... now this forum has officially descended into the "I'm a liberal and we liberals own the EV movement and all things renewable" rat hole.

News for you: You don't own anything of the sort.

What you do accomplish is to put others off from owning an EV. They don't want to be associated with you and your imaginary enemies, or your hateful remarks. Think about that when you're spinning in your worry that EV sales will be stifled. I've been watching this nonsense for over 5 years and I'll never play this imaginary enemies game with you.

When I'm not driving my EV I'm out in my 4 wheel drive pickup truck (yes I own one of those too) looking for EVs to run off the road and charging station parking spots so I can "ICE" you.

Seriously, get a grip.

Why advocate such trifling half-measures as income caps and increasing rebates for the poor? Surely it would be even "smarter" to proceed directly to pure communism. We wouldn't need to worry then about anyone having an income that's too high.

Kids, if you are ever confused about why intelligent conversations are so difficult to have, read this post and understand that unfortunately more and more adults seem to be thinking like this...they hold a pure and righteous position on said subject and if you dare to disagree you are nothing better than whale snot.

Love or hate Elon Musk, he took the EV out of the Green Masochist demographic, and into the wealthy tech junkie demographic.

I like electromotive drive for a daily driver because its a superior driving experience. Better transmission, better motor, more convenient.

I tried to order my I-Pace with Baby Seal Fur interior, and Endangered Hardwood trim, but it was not available. At least I could get real Dead Cow seats instead of plastic, errr... Vegan Leather.

If you want to Save The Planet, walk, ride a bicycle, or take mass transit, in that order. Then if you can't, small EV and buy solar panels, small EV, large EV, small hybrid, normal ICE vehicles, then helicopters.

Just vote for the Green New Deal! If you've read it and the FAQs (which AOC deleted from her congressional web page) you know what a modern communist manifesto reads like.

And there goes your I-Pace out the window. If anyone who's well off thinks the commies aren't coming for you first, think again.

I watched as a well off person complained about our new tax law costing his rich arse more because he lives in a high SALT state (my state BTW). I thought "How odd - you'd think taxing the rich would be a leftie thing. Here we have (*GASP*) Republicans taxing you more." I had no sympathy for his whining.

It's common on EV sites and in main stream media (an oxymoron IMO). That's where I see the pious imaginary enemies thing the most often.

Yep, you now drive a car that's very different from most other folks. Try not to get the idea that you're suddenly special. It's unbecoming, and generally not helpful to EV manufacturers.

And or the record, unless you sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic every day you're not making much of a dent in the air pollution problem. Your pedestal may only be an inch tall.

Yes, that's why they fully support California's cap-and-trade system. It's a license to pollute. When California played with the idea of ending cap-and-trade, who cried the loudest? The polluters.

There's your liberal politics at work: CARB officially licensed polluting. Well done pious thinkers - you nailed it.

Someone may have failed to inform you that a Texas oil man and Republican president signed the alternative fuel vehicle tax credit into law. I think his name was George something.

When I think of all the cow farts that went into making your luxury car seats, I could cry.....

Oh well, I think I'll order steak for dinner anyway.

Seriously, I'll be having steak tonight. My EV will offset the carbon footprint.

And if you believe that last line about carbon offset, I may actually start crying.
Wow there's a lot of fake news here. It's one thing to be angry, but another to have the facts wrong. It's a fact that beef is horrible for the environment; whether you choose to eat it is up to you. Etc.

Don't be fooled. If that cow ever escaped, it would eat you alive in a heartbeat. Kill or be killed.
Human leather was used for lampshades by Socialists once upon a time.
I imagine they will do it again; history doesn't repeat, but it often does rhyme.
