Ford To Gasmobiles: Look Out, Solid State EV Batteries Are Coming

We know that Ford is interested in all solid-state technology because the Colorado based company Solid Power just announced that Ford has joined a group of heavy-hitting investors that are putting up the big bucks for a stake in the future of EV battery technology.

Solid Power is a spinoff from research at the University of Colorado at Boulder aimed at improving the range of EV batteries. Not just any old research. A while back this particular project nailed down a $3.4 million grant from the US Department of Energy’s ARPA-E office for supporting cutting edge clean tech.

-----------------------------

They already have a head start because Solid Power already has its first fully automated, roll-to-roll production facility in the works. It should be up and running before you know it, as in sometime before the end of June.
Full article at Clean Technica. Sounds like more than a pipe dream.

We went from silver-oxide, lead-acid, NiCd, NiMH, LiFePO4, to our 4.2v lithium polymer cells of today for EV propulsion.

It will most likely change again. Either a massive jump in fuel-cell technology or a new battery tech will occur at some point unless the government stops it. If the government halts it, look for the signs to occur first in California, which is an oil-producing state with a heavy ICE import lobby.

I'm wondering what will happen with the rest of the solid-state research going on, providing it's not just smoke and mirrors. This one already has a roll-to-roll production facility being built ("in the works").

And because I had no idea what I just said, I looked it up.

What Is Roll-To-Roll Processing?

I knew you buy electronic components on rolls now, but I had no idea what true Roll-to-Roll technology was. Thanks!

Our government is easily purchased by outside interests. It's one of the reasons we seem so schizo as a nation. Banks are socialist? The rich are for taxing the rich?

Then you find out what is really happening outside the marketing claims.

You're very welcome. I like to share when I learn something. I imagine you can relate since your work with/for manufacturing companies. I've seen a lot of things in my previous life but no one can see it all.

I'm going to keep a positive thought for now.

I wonder how companies like Ford et al make decisions to get in on such things and with whom. From the outside it seems like a crap shoot, but Ford must have had some sort of insight.

I was just reading about graphene batteries for drones and other RC applications.

Evidently, they have multiple advantages, including total discharge comparable to batteries with ~40% more voltage, with that providing size and weight advantages.

I wonder if they have potential use in BEVs?
