I drove both the I-Pace and 2017 Fusion AWD to the car wash a couple of miles away using the same route, driving style, time, temperature - heck, I even listened to the same playlist on my IPOD. The only difference was the Fusion was stopped by a red light for 30 seconds. The I-Pace attained 101 MPGe while the Fusion managed a paltry 14.3 MPG. Yes, the I-Pace probably underestimates energy consumption but the Fusion also overestimates MPG so although not an exact comparison, the test is a pretty good. I'll take an EV that's 7x more efficient on short trips any day. Since June 1st, the I-Pace has been 5x more efficient than the Fusion with only 20,000 miles, new tires, and a recent service that included fuel system cleaning and new air filter - all costs the I-Pace won't incur. To be fair, any gas and maintenance savings are easily offset by the cost of purchasing the EV but every trip in the Fusion is now disappointing.
