I am getting a warning that the charge port door is open, it isn't.
is this a unique issue or is it well know and is there a known fix so I can skip a visit to the service center

It has happened and needs to get fixed. It will keep the car from going to sleep and may cause other issues (eg. 12V drain).
Have you tried the simple thing of opening and closing it? Try locking the car too.

the car is locked when parked and I haven't noticed any sort of drain on the 12v.

I have the same for some weeks. JLR says that they have to change the sensor.
