This is the beginning of a whole new chapter in my home Automation saga. I've left the USA and have moved back to the UK after 26 years overseas, being a combination of Australia and California. Indeed, it was the move to California in 2017 that started me on the whole Home Automation kick as it is always easier when starting again. So, here we are again....

Obviously I needed to buy a car and I wanted to do the right thing and buy an EV. I've been a long term Jaguar fan and in 2019 they made it easy by releasing the Jaguar I-Pace, which won world car of the year. As soon as 2nd hand ones became available, I started thinking about trading in my gorgeous F-Type V6S for the I-Pace. The move to the UK precipitated that, and so I bought an early 2019 I-Pace SE.

Funnily enough, I wouldn't look at a Tesla because they don't have CarPlay and also I don't like the tablet interface which makes you take your eyes off the road to do anything.... even check your speed! Lastly, the ride in the Tesla actually makes me Car Sick.

I should say, that since initially writing this article, I have become a JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) employee. This hasn't affected my views on anything here, and the article has only become embellished with more info, rather than edited to tow the corporate line.

MagSafe

So, CarPlay! Yay! So happy... except that JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) do not do wireless CarPlay. You have to open the central console and plug your phone in via USB.

Now I know that Wireless CarPlay isn't actually done by that many manufacturers, but still wired is not what I really wanted.

I've discovered that Jaguar is coming out with a Black Edition, which is essentially a standard version of what I have. However, in the announcement is says that Wireless CarPlay is going to come in an over the air update. No date on that though, and it will only be for the newer updated models with the newer Pivot Pro Infotainment system..>
Also, I want to charge my phone whilst I'm driving so a Qi charger would also have been nice and the central console does have a superb place to put a Qi charger, which is a flat area just under the environment controls and it is even the perfect size for my iPhone 12 Max Pro.

< I've subsequently discovered that it is an optional extra to make this space a Qi Mobile Phone charger>

This was going to require some thought. If I was going to use that flat area then I needed to buy a Qi charger. Therefore, I might as well get the MagSafe version. This then led to wanting wireless CarPlay. Fortunately, Jaguar saw fit to place 2 USB-A chargers at the front of the central console as well as inside towards the back.

Also, all the USB sockets on the 2019 Jag are USB-A and I need USB-C for MagSafe. To do that, I bought a USB-A to USB-C adapter. The 2021 Jag has a USB-C inside the centre console, but not at the front, where I needed the connector.

I initially placed the MagSafe charger in the flat space and plugged it into a very close USB port which, annoyingly, does not connect to the car's CarPlay capability. What I didn't think about there was that the MagSafe is Magnetic and so sticks to your phone when you lift it up. That was easily solved by getting some 3M double-sided pads which I then used to stick down the MagSafe charger. All good!

Checking the online Jaguar forums, and especially for the I-Pace, it seems that these devices have to have firmware that can support specific vehicles. The Carlinkit.3.0 was getting lots of good reviews and so I ordered one of those.

I received the Carlinkit.3.0 ((U2W Plus) Carlinkit 3.0 Wireless Apple CarPlay Adapter Dongle for Wired CarPlay) about a week later. The documentation comes in Chinese and English... Unfortunately in often badly translated English. The documentation is tiny and not that easy to follow. However, it only took a few minutes to get the device working. There was a QR code to connect to the Adapter, via WiFi, and download any OTA updates... which I did. Seems a bit strange if they could deliver a QR code for that, why not for the instructions.. which they could improve over time.

Still, it works! Brilliant Stuff, so I now have wireless CarPlay.

I also got the MagSafe charger.

I've been using the Carlinkit3.0 for a while now, both for navigation and music and it has been flawless operation. However, it is a little slow to connect when you first turn on the car. It's less than a minute, but in these days of expecting instant gratification it can seem like a while, especially if you want to get going on your trip.

The reality of using the space under the climate controls in operation was not so good. To be fair to JLR, all down to user problems. Effectively, because my phone was hidden from view so well that Hot Black would have been proud. a Black Phone on a black background. Why was this an issue? I kept forgetting my phone and leaving it in the car. I needed it to be more visible.

Thus I moved the MagSafe charger up to a space on the dash board, next to one of the 3 screens that the I-Pace has. It works perfectly, and I have routed the cable so it is mostly hidden.

Initially I thought it wouldn't bother me being in White... but it did, so I replaced it with a 3rd party accessory that is black.

Upgrade of Wireless CarPlay.

I have been working as a freelance advisor to a car accessory company for a while now, mostly around futures and potential opportunities for collaboration.

Recently, without me knowing, they launched Carlinkit 3.0 which is an a Chinese product. However, you do get USA support and they do have their own firmware.

It also comes with a USB Data Blocker so you can use the extra USB-A port on the adapter to charge up your phone, but I don't need that.

Upon request, you can also get a USB-C data cable rather than USB-A.

Set up was extremely quick. The instructions are better written. There was a bug where it initially says it's a VW, very traumatic to a Jaguar owner, but it soon got over it. This has subsequently been fixed.


What I particularly like, now, is that there is no wait for connection. The Wireless CarPlay is just there!

Integration with HomeKit.

After I initially wrote this blog post, I wondered if there was a HomeBridge integration into the Jaguar InControl API.
InControl enables a number of things, such as remotely seeing if the car is unlocked, how much it's charged and if it is charging. It also enables pre-conditioning, which is the warming up of the car before you travel somewhere so the batteries work at peak efficiency.

Just to confuse things, though, the JLR (Jaguar Land Rover) app is called Jaguar Remote, or Land Rover Remote if you have one of those vehicles. To make it even worse, there are two versions, and for some reason the old version, called Jaguar InControl Remote, is still hanging around.

As it happens, there is a plugin, called JLR InControl.

Installation was easy, although I must say it came up with a few warnings.

Configuration

This is one of those plugins that requires a fair amount of manual configuration and you also have to hardcode your username and password, which is not really good practice, still I find the fact I have some control of my car to be rather excellent.

Pretty much, you need to follow the instructions provided and it will work.

These Screen shots show the Pre-conditioning and also the charger, so now I can actually create automations based on the battery level, such as starting to charge the car. I can also now pre-condition the car based on my calendar events. As it happens, tomorrow I have to start at 7:30am, so I have an automation to pre-condition the car so it is optimal by the time I want to leave.

I can also automatically unlock the car for the morning too, if I wish.

Personal Automation
It's always nice to have some fun with your automation, and so I decided to do so with this set up.

What I thought would be nice would be for the car to tell me how nice it was to see me again.

Use the shortcuts app, and select the "Automations" tab, at the bottom of the screen.

At the top of the screen select "+", and then when prompted create a "personal automation".

It's really quite simple. The hardest part was me working out how to spell my name in such a way that it would be pronounced correctly. For some reason, it finds it difficult to speak Gaelic.

Make sure you de-select "Ask Before Running" otherwise the whole exercise is rather pointless.
Making sure the car is locked.
This one actually uses the HomeKit integration. If the app supported Shortcuts, then I could have done it there. I'm going to work on this automation a bit more, effectively to create a geolocation around the car. However, in the short term I have decided to just lock the car when disconnected from CarPlay.

Very cool post and information, thank you. One thing is unclear, though: You mention getting Carlinkit 3.0, then there is a header which mentions an upgrade to "MagixDrive" but in that paragraph it says Carlinkit 3.0 again, then says it's similar to CarPlay2Air. It's not clear which Wireless CarPlay kit you finally ended up using.

I’ve been playing around with the shortcuts app for my home security system. But found it hard to integrate. You have some really cool ideas like having it speak your name. I would prolly have it play a relaxing chime or something instead. But that’s a neat trick that I’m definitely going to set up.

Out of curiosity why do you want to mount the phone and have sight of it when you get the key phone data via carplay (or Android Auto in my case), assume you want to see something you can't push to the car, so curious on the use case?

On previous cars (and previous iterations of android auto which could run standalone on the phone) it made sense to have the car doing its thing and the phone doing its own and I just pushed phone sound to the car via Bluetooth but if using carplay or AA in the car, the use case isn't entirely clear.

The only thing I find is that leaving the phone on the wireless charging pad and running wireless android auto, I often tend to forget to pick up the phone when leaving the car.

I am pretty sure the car used to say "don't forget your phone" in text on the Pivi screen but I don't recall seeing that message recently (unless I am thinking of the other car).

You make a fair point re: work apps, I wasn't thinking about that. I would like to see a MS Teams app on Android Auto although I can mainly manage calls via the Pivi phone app once I have started them using teams.

Thanks for your correction. Actually, I have tested a total of three adapters, and I am currently using Carlinkit 3.0. It is like an upgrade version of Cplay2Air because it is detachable.
