Hi Team,

I finally worked out a deal: Corris Grey S; and will need to drive it from LA to Monterey County.

Thought I'd check whether anyone has done the drive or mapped out the route, and has recommendations.

Many thanks!

Oh you are brave!
between evgo, electrify america, chargepoint, etc there will be plenty of options. Just plan on having plenty of extra time.
Thanks, still contemplating my level of courage here. :)

I went to the Open Charge Map, and I did not see that many chargers along the 5 fwy. Please let me know if you believe there's more
and I should look at a different source.

Here's what I found -- start from the bottom and read up.

Home ~ 30 miles from Hollister.

291 McCray St., Hollister 118 miles from Coalinga EvGo

25020 Dorris Ave., Coalinga Best Western 115 miles from Bakersfield.

14684 Aloma St., Lost Hills, Days Inn (this is 200 miles from Riverside, you might not make it. Instead go to Bakersfield, below.)

1717 Truxtun Ave., Bakersfield -- off of the 99. 171 miles from Riverside. Chargepoint.net
START at Riverside with say 180 miles of range.

Looking again, I see I can cut-out the Hollister stop, and just do

START (Riverside) - Bakersfield - Coalinga - HOME.

Danm it's shocking that I5 doesn't have more. It's almost better to take 101!

Most of the chargers are located off the 101 or the 99 rather than the 5.
If you leave the dealer with 100%, looks like you could drive the 190 miles to the Walmart in Delano, charge to 90-100%, then drive the 180 miles to home. Others in CA are reporting 225 miles or more.

BTW, I recommend PlugShare

Thanks for the feedback and tips. Perhaps I've been watching the UK forum range estimates too much, as they're being impacted by a different winter experience.
Also, great tip = Plug Share. Open Charge doesn't even show the Delano Walmart . . .

Speed and temp seem to be the consumption killers. Based on what I’ve seen, if you average less than 55mph and the temps are in the 60’s you will have no trouble getting 225.

That isn’t what I’ve experienced, but I’ve never driven my car with temps above 30F...
Remember Electrify America 150 kW chargers are down.
Started yesterday.
Check their website for locations.

Electrify America partially shuts down its network as its global supplier investigates safety issue with high-powered charging cables. Jan. 25th.:surprise:

Yeah, that's in-line with what I've come to expect. Although I will be one of the slowest fish in the pond, this will not be a <55 mph trip. So, I will revert to my more conservative routing.
Throwing in the towel on this idea. I like driving and I like adventure; but ultimately I am going with the planning overview posted by DougTheMac on page 104 of the "I-Pace range" thread at the UK Forum. https://www.ipaceforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=409&start=1030

Doug advises that a typical 80% charge enroute is only good for ~120 miles of freeway driving. Besides the inefficiencies posed for a 400 mile journey, the charger situation on available routes would likely require at least one very long ( 2 hour) charging stop to achieve ~100% (at Bakersfield or Delano) or leave me stranded heading north on the 5. . . I could cut over to the 101, but would still be looking at a 10 hour trip. So, I'll likely avoid the time-sink and hassle, and put it on a truck (for this rare long journey).
That's pretty sensible. The car will be so new to you that you'll want to figure it out without the pressure of that journey. I've really benefited from setting aside some quality time to learn, do settings, and go on short 'test drives' in the past couple of days.

Once you have the car figured out it will be fine to do that trip.

Took one more look at the 99, finally taking Bruintoo's suggestion. Definitely the best north-south California route for 50kw chargers. Here's a potential routing Riverside to Monterey/Salinas.

Riverside - 170 miles to - Bakersfield - 120 miles to - Madera - 120 miles to - Salinas.

The best chargers appear to be at Walmarts and SaveMarts along the way.

Would require two very long charging stops. . . So, not for first trip in the new car, but thought I'd share the info.

@Calidave I have mine for 2 months now and put on 1800 miles. Most of temps have been <40 degrees here in NY.

Honestly, it is easy to get at LEAST 180 miles as long as you do two things:

1) Limit your speed to no more than 65 mph
2) Turn climate (heat and A/C) off. ( you can use seat heat if you want or need)

Doing those two things alone and you are likely to see over 200 miles or more even in 50 degree weather.

PS If you limit to 55 mph then over 220 miles

Many thanks, PGhiron!

That's all good, and fits the 170-mile initial leg @ 65mph. The subsequent legs are shorter due to only getting 80% charge at the 50kw chargers (1.5 hrs).

In any case, I am very happy to hear about your experiences and numbers, as the car is really intended for day trips here around Monterey, and not the extended journey that would be required for initial pick-up.

@ 55, I may be able to pull off Hwy 1 to San Simeon and back . . .

Happy travels!

We are looking to replace the C-Max Energi. TM3 turned out not to be a hatchback, so waiting to see what the TMY turns out to be. Have a deposit on the e-Tron but we are leaning towards the I-Pace. Waiting till release of the Y and test drive of the e-Tron to decide, but I-Pace is current favorite.
