Regulators are going to make all EVs make "white noise" at low speeds ... aren't they?

That will probably happen at just the time that all cars are capable of AEB stopping / avoiding pedestrians ...

typical government.

Town will sound awful, with all cars doing < 20 MPH going Beep Beep Beep ...

Crazy!

I had someone walk behind my car when i was reverse parking a couple of weeks ago. I hit him (but he just walked off ... presumably realised it was his fault). My car was moving when he started moving behind me, and he was at opposite corner to the one I was checking at that moment. Admittedly a Beep Beep might have stopped him doing that.

(Friend's car, small cheap runaround. All my cars would have given me an alert that there was something in the way)

I'm afraid you're right.

Still, I hope the I-Pace is not made to sound an alarm like a garbage truck does when backing up!

Imo the I-Pace has one of the coolest sounding simulated exhaust notes in the segment and it can be toggled on/off. Personally I don't think they'll all be getting generic Jetson like effects, but we'll see proper synthesized petrol engine sounds on premium EV's.

Hopefully it's an external speaker for all these noises that can be unplugged...
Tesla got it right. Dead silence. That's what I want.

Legislators won't like that ...:crying:

My guess is that you won't be able to hear the (external) white noise generator [for pedestrians] from within the car ...

... all the young pedestrians have ear phones in anyway and never hear even a loud car coming ...

P.S. Sadly I originally wrote "eternal noise generator" ... hope that's not prophetic!

The Bolt supposedly has a pedestrian warning noise below ~14mph. But as a driver, I never would have known if I had not seen it on the internet somewhere. I did once roll down my windows and listened closely to hear the sound, and I think I heard something but it was not a problem at all for me. There are some owners who don't like it, so they just pull a fuse and the noise is gone.

In the US, I understand it's legal to sell silent cars without pedestrian warning sounds until September of 2019. I guess I don't mind so long as the noise is as unobtrusive as the Bolt's. I'm all for safety, but I figure it's still the driver's responsibility regardless. I doubt the noise is actually helpful, just another case of government being worse than useless.

Outside noises are pretty low on my new-car worry list. With the Fiat 500e, you could somewhat hear the pedestrian noise from the inside. I unplugged the speaker. Problem solved. The iPace will have a lot more sound deadening than the Fiat, though.

Similarly, for the FRS, I removed and plugged the sound tube that pipes intake noise into the cabin. That's just silly.
