Hi everyone,

I'm wanted to share that my 2019 I-PACE buyback request has been approved by Jaguar North America! I know many of you have had similar challenges, and I hope my experience provides some encouragement and information. Note that I started this process about 10 days before Jaguar made any buyback announcements for the 2019 model, so I am unsure if I am on the same path as everyone else.

Important Note: I'm in California, which has strong lemon law protections. Your experience in other states may differ. My I-PACE currently has 66k miles and is out of the factory bumper-to-bumper warranty, but still within the battery warranty period.

The Final Straw: After experiencing ongoing issues, including a full battery replacement last year after the H441 recall, the H514 recall was the final straw for me. I decided to pursue a buyback under the California Lemon Law and contacted Jaguar in November 2024.

Here's a quick timeline of the key events:
  • November 14, 2024: Contacted Jaguar North America to start the process.
  • November 19, 2024: Received a case number and was assigned a case manager.
  • November 21, 2024: Submitted requested documentation (sales contract, etc.).
  • December 12, 2024: My case was escalated to the Process Specialist team.
  • December 27, 2024: Process Specialist reached out to gather more paperwork.
  • January 10, 2025: Received official buyback approval!
  • January 15, 2025: Completed pre-inspection at the dealer.
  • January 16, 2025: My case was moved to the Consumer Affairs team.
The Teams Involved:
To give you an idea of what to expect, here are the different teams at Jaguar I worked with:
  • Customer Relationship Centre: The initial point of contact. They gather information and assign a case manager.
  • Process Specialist Team: Reviews your case in detail and acts as your advocate.
  • Consumer Affairs: The final decision-making authority on buyback requests.
What's Next:
My car is currently at the dealership for the pre-inspection step, where they are checking the car's condition and verifying the mileage. Once that's complete, I expect to receive a formal buyback offer.

My expectation for a buyback amount around $38k (not official or confirmed), based on an online calculator, but I have no idea if I will get anything close to this. $52k is shown on some calculators that include interest.

Possible NDA:
I may be required to sign a NDA, like Pseudonym did as part of the final buyback agreement. If that happens, I might need to remove this post or edit it to remove specific details. But I'll share as much as I can beforehand, and I hope others will do the same! We can rely on our collective knowledge and experience to help each other navigate this process.

As part of this process I have spoken to legal counsel, but not engaged them on this yet as I am satisfied with the process so far, and will only consider getting representation if they above factors change or if the buyback offer is too low.

I'll keep you all posted on the final outcome. Wish me luck with the final steps!

Thanks for sharing this - this is very informative. I'm also one of those affected - I have the 2019 HSE model which I truly enjoy driving. I'm just curious - what part of Ca do you live? I'm in Norcal, and have been dealing with Jaguar SF, but has been taking my car for all the recall work in Jaguar Marin (they are much nicer and more customer service focused).

Did they look at the condition of the car at all, or was it just year and miles driven?

I completed the pre-inspection today at my local dealership. The service manager conducted a thorough 10-minute inspection of the vehicle's condition, created a report, and had me sign it. He said he would email the report to JLR as requested and that I should hear back from JLR in a few days, although it sometimes takes longer.

He also shared that he performs 2-3 pre-inspections per month (presumably for buyback purposes) for Jaguar, Land Rover, and Range Rover, out of approximately 200 sales per month at that location.

This evening, my JLR Process Specialist emailed me to confirm that they have received all the necessary documentation and handed it over to the Consumer Affairs team. They advised to allow up to 30 days for follow up.

So it appears I have passed the first two gates (Customer Relationship, Process Specialist) with one remaining.

So today I heard back from Jaguar, Consumer Affairs department, my first time talking with them. They said there were preparing my buyback offer and asked for the following.
  • 30-day payoff from your bank, including the per diem.
  • Payment history
They said that once they have this updated info they would be able to release my repurchase agreement for my review and signature. I have submitted these documents before on January 13th, but both are stall now as the payoff has changed and one more payment has been made. Feels like I'm getting closer though.

Got my process started in November of 2024. Took sometime to retrieve my contract from my original sale since the dealership was bought out by another.

I just signed my buyback offer yesterday. I found it was decently fair. I think they could have probably gone a little higher, but to me definitely not worth the litigation. And would rather not pay a lawyer.

Now I just wait for them to set up a time for me to bring car in, which seemed like it could take some time (again). 30 plus days. Then I will turn it in and sign all of the papers. Hope this helps, can’t share specifics. But for driving an excellent vehicle (aside the recalls 🤣) for over 5yrs now, and basically getting most of that back, I can’t complain.

wishing you all the best outcomes as well!!

Has anyone here had a buyback successfully completed (or even well into the process) who does not live in CA? I am in GA and my first communication was in Nov. with a series of miscommunications and falsehoods about the process since. I was told repeatedly that I would hear something in "a week", "1-2 days" and even "1-2 hours". Now the message is basically "shut up and wait". I don't think it would take them more than an afternoon to compose and distribute an email with some sort of realistic update. My car had a "gearbox fault" warning so the dealer recommended that I stop driving it until they buy it back. That was a month ago and I've already moved on and bought something else while the ipace sits idle.

On the eve of Jaguar attempting to relaunch themselves as a high end electric brand I think it more than a little shi**y that they can't take better care of their early adopters. I'm thinking about calling their PR department with a prepared press release to that effect to see if it gets their attention. If it doesn't then maybe I can start calling around to outlets like Electrek to see if they would pick it up.

I think this is also potentially bordering on a the makings of a class action lawsuit.

Thoughts? Anyone have anything they want to add about their experiences outside CA?

For what it's worth, if you financed the car (or leased it) your lender in that situation should have a copy of the papework on file that they can send you. I already did this with Chase.

Thanks, ya I started this process too with Chase.
The old dealership is not able to locate my Contract even though I have a copy of the additional things i purchased like Paint/Leather/Tire protection which has the contract number and all the details. They also mentioned the doc fee is used just for processing the documentation with DMV, etc its not used for storage and they have no obligation to give the customers a copy if they have lost it.
Also got an email from Jaguar today where they mentioned they are also not able to locate the Purchase Contract or Agreement. 5 years is a long time I am sure a lot of folks will be in this boat and not sure what the resolution will be.

If the car is being recalled (entire model year), it is essentially worthless to anyone. Will JLR service the car of you refuse to allow JLR to buy it back? Will JLR service the car if another owner buys it? They are buying it back because they don't want the liability from the risk of the vehicle being on the road, so it is essentially unsellable.

When did you take delivery of your car? I just learned that the statue of limitation was drastically reduced by new laws that came into effect on January 1st. It's now 1 year after warranty expiration and no later than 6 years after delivery. If you were one of the first to get their I-Pace (like me), then we don't have CA lemon law protection. It seems that Jaguar dragging out this process will get a lot of Californians out of the the CA lemon law protection period.

For those in CA who are within the 6 year delivery window, I think you should reach out to a lemon law lawyer ASAP. I spoke to Johnson & Buxton and they seem pretty good - it was them who told me about the new law.
