Plenty of people "stretched" to buy a Tesla, that forum is littered with "This is 3x what I normally pay for a car" so, yeah, I reckon some will. You can buy a used Range Rover and chuck some vanity plates on it so that noone knows how old it is [in UK the plates the car comes with indicate "year", but people buy plates with low numbers, or that "sort of spell something", and you can pay a modest "transfer fee" to put the plate on another car - not quite the same as free-text plates in USA though). But for someone wanting to look flash they way want the latest model, and no second hand i-Pace available of course .. so I reckon "yeah"

Big saving on Electricity vs Fossil Fuel (not so much in USA). At 27K miles p.a. Electricity is between $4000-$5000 cheaper a year for me. Also I can charge at work (and not be taxed on that "benefit"). Maybe that $400 per month gets me the finance difference for a $90K car?

It depends on where you are in life. If your house is paid for, the kids college is funded as is your retirement, then $100k car for $100k household income with an 7.5 year use period and 25% resale, isn't that brutal. That's about $1000 a month to have a nice car.

If you paying a large mortgage, have other large bills, are trying to fund college/kids, and putting some away for retirement? Even at $300k family income, you might not be planning very well. Jobs are not guaranteed.

What about this 20% tariff that your president want to stick on to European cars? The i-Pace being a British car built in Austria, it will hit it head on. Maybe more cars coming to Canada after all!

Well, that Chevrolet Bolt is a nice little electric car. And I could get two of them for the price of an I-Pace. Two and a half, with a big tariff...

Come on, I just got my buddy to switch to EV over the weekend, bought a Leaf, and I told him it is a chick magnet... haha!

As a side note the 2018 Leaf with ProPilot is a great value offering.

Europe typically has a 10% tariff and a 20% VAT or higher.

US has a 2.5% tariff and no VAT.

So even with a 20% tariff, there will still be a bigger price difference.

Price a Corvette in France vs. USA for a real eye opener. $96,000 in France, and $55,500 in the USA for the same version. That's not 30%.
