i-Pace will remain a unique design

I admit to being dumbfounded by this news:

https://www.greencarreports.com/news...-tesla-model-s

JLR is developing a platform that accepts both ICE and EV drivetrains. Arg. No wonder Ian Callum quit. He was/is an ardent proponent of no-compromise EV design, which manifested in the i-Pace. JLR's strategy is the antithesis of that .. putting ICE and EV on the same platform. Bah.

It's so much cheaper to develop a single platform. I understand the compromises but with JLR's financial situation it makes sense. And if my car turns into a lemon I'll wait a year and take an XJ. My '04 XJR is in my top 2 or 3 cars. Only weakness was RWD in Colorado.

Well it may be that as more manufacturers shift to EV drivetrain it makes more sense to have a unified platform. This is a pretty common design strategy across different vehicles. As long as the platform is designed from ground up to support both it is not as much of an issue as when they used to just stick a motor on an ICE vehicle and call it a day.

In fact it may signify the day where EV drivetrains are just part of the normal lineup instead of one off vehicles.

Well I can't blame them. I-Pace is not selling like a Tesla.

In some other thread I said our cars would go the way of the Lexus CT200H... I'm sticking with that statement unfortunately...

I think EV and ICE design needs are vastly different. Designing for both creates too many compromises.

Exactly. That's the point of my post. See this interview with Ian Callum and understand:
