The various articles make it sound like JLR wants part of the Gen5 eDrive system BMW's been working on. I'm not sure how I feel about that, given the performance we see from JLR's existing system in the i-Pace.
The Gen5 system eliminates the dependency on rare earth minerals, most of which are mined in China. This eliminates a major Achilles heel present in electric cars - the rare earth magnets used in nearly all of the present electric drive systems. Rare earth minerals are expensive to mine and very destructive to the environment (something you don't hear too much about). If BMW has developed a motor that retains efficiency without rare earth minerals, that would indeed be worth partnering on.
