HOV stickers in California - Info.

The CVRP (Clean Vehicle Rebate) application has some bad wording in it about HOV/CAV access stickers. Many new EV owners seem to think you must choose between the $2500 rebate and the HOV sticker. This is not true. You can get both.
Another misconception is that the income cap is $150k. That is only for a single person, or married filing separately. It's $204k Head of Household, and $300k Married filing joint. But they only check a fraction of the applications according to the CVRP.
Another note is the CVRP rebate is not limited to 2 cars per family. After Jan 1, 2015, there is a 2 car limit per 'entity'. Previous cars do not count. An entity is an individual. So if you are married, you can collect 4 rebates for purchases after 1/1/15.

If you are happily married, it is normally best to register both spouses using OR as the designation: Jane Smith OR John Smith, then the next EV, John Smith OR Jane Smith. This allows cars to be sold with one signature if there is a death or other issue. If you are not so happy, then it's AND which stops one spouse from selling your car.

My recommendation is to apply after December 31, 2018. The red stickers now are only good up to 2022. The new purple stickers coming after January 1, 2019 are good up to 2023.

I LOVE YOU BRO!

I did NOT see that, and I was going to apply the minute I got a hard copy registration. You saved me a year!

I think they go by date of issuance, not date of application, so you might have been ok anyway - it always takes them a few weeks to issue. But I'd hate to lose all of 2022 in exchange for the last few days of 2018.

Better make sure my dealer isn't applying for me now.

It is date of issuance, but you never know. The DMV might miraculously give you a quick turnaround after application!

Yes, maybe out of incompetence, or maybe just plain spite!

What was interesting, but perhaps not ideal, was that Rydell Chevrolet put the HOV stickers on the Volt when we took delivery. The dealer had the stickers for the cars before sold.
In this case of a Nov 28 delivery, I'm glad Newport Beach JLR are EV NFG's (derogatory term - clueless).

I think we need a specific term for EV Dealers who know nothing about EVs, since they are a fairly common animal. Hmmm...
  • EVL(s)? Electric Vehicle Luddites (organization of people who tried to stop progress). "Ugghh... Singh Chevrolet were a bunch of EVLs." Or EV Losers could be another translation.
  • ~EV of -EV = ~ is the logical NOT or approx system, and '-' is the negation symbol. So it pretty easy to decode. "Is there a BMW dealer who sells i3's that isn't ~EV?" "Drove all the way out there, and while they claimed to be EV, they were ~EV."
Short descriptors are best unless they are so common they have multiple meanings, like BLM and BLM and BLM. "BLM files suit to relocate monument." Fed land bureau? Political Action Committee? Or just a black male? M3 and M3 and M3. "My M3 is the shop because it stripped out the M3 bolt that holds the lower steering column cover, so I'm driving my M3 right now." Gotta say WT-M3-F is going on there?
