second thoughts...

Hi all-
I was just informed that my i-Pace will be at the dealer next week.
Given the number of issues people seem to be having with the car, I'm having second thoughts.
I currently drive a gen2 Volt, previously a gen1 Volt, and had essentially zero problems with either.
Is there anybody in this forum who HASN'T had major issues with their i-Pace?

I'm in exactly the same frame of mind.. My vehicle is set to arrive at the dealership in early January. The laundry list of electrical system faults and failures seems to be growing.
Besides unexpected poorer than anticipated cold weather range, has anyone had a completely trouble/fault free first few weeks with their I-Pace?

Besides it’s thirst for electricity I cannot complain of problems per se, occasional lagginess of the infotainment system, etc. but no real issues. It really is hard to gauge the scope of a problem by what is being posted to Forums. Consider there are probably 400 or more cars on the road but only about 10-20 people posting anything about their cars, makes it impossible to know what percentage of total cars have issues.

You should have heard all the complaints on the Web about my 3 Volts:
  • Infotainment sucks, locks up, not as good as "My Lexus/MB/Acura/etc". Although it is the #1 complaint across all brands and models of cars today.
  • Lack of rear visibility.
  • Erratic brakes on wet slippery surfaces.
  • Too slow of charging.
  • Heater acts up.
  • Not getting the advertised range.
  • Traction battery issues (Gen 2)
  • Carplay sucks (Apples fault, but who cares who's fault)
  • Clicking in front axles
  • Manual seats
  • Lack of Mountain Mode on early models
  • OnStar Sucks (it doesn't but who am I to say, I've only owned a dozen cars with it)
  • Too dim of headlights (Gen 1)
  • Dealers talk you out of buying them.
  • Nobody has them in stock.
  • Too much money for what you get.
  • No Adaptive Cruise (fixed in 2017)
  • Only 4 seats (like the new Prius Prime, which nobody complains about) Fixed in 2016 model.
  • No room for 5 people (funny, I drove a lot with 5 people)
  • Rear camera sucks (meh, I've seen a LOT worse)
  • It's dirty filthy disgusting hybrid (well, our fleet average was 380 miles per gallon, so suck on that Toyota)
  • 32/38/53 miles is not enough pure EV range (average roundtrip commute in the USA is 22 miles)
  • etc
  • etc

But we had incredible reliability and fun in our 3 Volts. We had the front click and the heater firmware issue once on the 2013. I still love driving the 2017 Volt. We even AutoX'd all 3 against each other with my two college kids and I.

That being said, I've had no serious problems with my i-Pace, just software bugs, and I have an early release. The front airdam doesn't come unlatched on each driveway, and I cruise over speedbumps at 25 mph. It handles better, by a bunch, and accelerates like Jaguar should. Deceptively quick in traffic situations. And it's the most relaxing freeway cruiser I've owned. The Second Place is the Cadillac CT6 Twin Turbo Platinum edition. Which doesn't actually suck, it's a large performance sedan with all the trimmings. And it cost more.

So far, I'm very happy with my choice including all the teething pains. Love driving it more than the Volt or CT6, and that's saying a lot.

Just make sure the dealer has performed all of the latest updates and tell them you want to see all outstanding SSM's or TSB's that could impact your car. It will be fine.

What else is going to fall off?

Software fixes are a nuisance but they don't speak to build quality. Like McRat, I've had a few updates to my car.

There is probably a limit to the length of a single post, so I could not list all the Web-Based complaints (and deaths) I've read about the Model S Tesla. 5 rear motor replacements in 2 years. Panoramic glass cracks all by itself. Door handles stop working. Car runs out juice by parking it for 4 days and needs towed. AP2 didn't work at all when sold. FSD never worked, and might not ever. Infotainment locks up so often there is a reboot method while driving. Painfully slow G1 software. Many features promised never materialized. Autowipers/lights are Yugo level. Advertised range is wildly exaggerated. SC speed is nerfed at some locations and some models. $140k Performance Model gets nerfed after 25 launches. Suspension members snap on normal roadways. Drivetrain overheats in <8 minutes. Brakes wear fairly fast for a EV. Tragically long waits for repairs. Etc Etc Etc.

But that's the Web. Most owners have pretty good luck and people love their Teslas. If 10% of the owners had serious problems Tesla would be dissolved.

So basing a car purchase on what you read on the Web concerning problems, will limit you to stripped down economy cars. No power, no breakage. No features, no issues with features. No expectations, no disappointment.

Cheap Toyotas don't actually last forever when compared to similar powered and featured cars. Their trucks and large SUVs are a case in point. They gave up on sportscars entirely because of it, and buy sportscars from Subaru instead. Which are anemic little cars with great handling.

Thanks to all those that responded.
The dealer has just told me on a call today that even though my vehicle arrives in early to mid January, he has been told by JLR that he cannot release it to me until the TSB's have been preformed and that includes the front suspension and the fix for the infotainment 'black outs.' He is estimating Feb 1 as a delivery date.
Maybe this is something new from JLR; not releasing the new vehicles to owners with existing software and components they know are problematic???

Thanks all-


I have no concerns re: actual vs advertised range. None of my regular commutes, or occasional weekend errands, get anywhere near even 150-160 miles, and I've already got the level 2 charger from the Volt installed in the garage. And for any family outing that might exceed the car's range, we've still got the missus' gas-burning SUV (vw Atlas). I never had serious concerns re: build quality, either, given that it's designed by a mature car company, and built by Magna Steyr (spelling?). Software 'glitches' are understandable, and fixable. I just fear a major software snafu that might 'brick' the car, and leave me unable to get to/from work.
As an aside, my dealer mentioned almost in passing that when the car needs servicing, they will pick it up from my home, leave me a loaner, service the car, and return it when finished. When I speak to Mr SalesGuy again, I'm most certainly going to double check this, since it's kind of a big deal. The dealership, which is the one closest to me, is a roughly 45 minute drive. Has anyone heard about this? If I recall, i think Mr SalesGuy implied that the home pick up/drop off is part of the Jaguar Elite-Care warranty. If that truly is the case, it makes the prospect of owning a potentially 'buggy' vehicle significantly more palatable.
